Chernigov

The history of the Chernigov land is rooted in distant past. Its colonization started about 100 thousand years ago, which is proved by antique samples exhibited in the museums and archeological evidences of the Chernigov land. In the 9th century, the process of forming the old-Russ feudal state – Kiev Rus – was over. This state included the Chernigov-Siversk land, which yielded only to Kiev in size and significance. The history of the Chernigov land is the history of war for the national independence. Chernigov was plundered by Tatar-Mongols, it endured the Lithuanian and Polish yoke. The people of the Chernigov land revolted participating in the national liberation war headed by B. Khmelnitsky. In 1669, small town of Baturin in the Chernigov land became the residence of the hetmans of the left-bank Ukraine and its capital. The palace of the last Ukrainian hetman, built in the beginning of the 19th century, being of great historical and cultural value, is located in Baturin.

Famous architectural, cultural and historical monuments are the Transfiguration Cathedral built in 1036, St. Assumption Cathedral, Boris and Gleb Cathedral (12th cent.) and the Elijah church. The Antoniy cave is one of the most known places of interest in Chernigov. This is the monastery in catacombs founded in 1069 by Antoniy, the Christian missionary. The monastery, which endured the Tatar-Mongol invasion, was restored in the 18th century.

Chernigov today is the agricultural, industrial and cultural center of the Chernigov Region. Its monuments and museums such as the Baturin historical and cultural preserve “The Hetman’s Capital”, the National historical and cultural preserve “Kachanovka”, the National architectural and historical preserve “Ancient Chernigov” and many others attract many tourists.
